Question by Michelle: SAHMs – How do you fill a routine day at home with your toddler?
Hi,
I’m a SAHM of one (a 3yr old boy). When we don’t have plans to be out of the house I find it difficult to fill our day with productive fun ideas that exclude the TV. I know there are some ultra-organized moms out there, who don’t like the “babysitter-in-a-box” either. I’d love to hear from you. What does a typical day at home look like for you?
My son wakes up at 9am. After we get through the normal get dressed/breakfast routine by 10am we usually start the day with about 20-30 mins of reading. From there, today, we played with play-doh from about 10:30am – 11:30am. By 11:30am *I* was bored with play-doh, so we moved to playing with trains until 1pm. After 1.5 hours of trains I couldn’t wait for the diversion of lunch. I sat my son down with his lunch in front of the TV from 1 – 2pm, because Sesame Street is on and then turned it off as soon as it was over. From 2 – 3pm we played with blocks and puzzles. Now, at 3:45pm I’m simply bored out of my mind and I turned on the computer for some diversion while my son vacillates from playing nicely by himself to begging me to play pirate ship, candyland, or trains again with him. I still have another 2hrs before Dad comes home and can take over some of the one-on-one attention.
I’d love a sample schedule of how other SAHMs manage a day, that has to be spent at home, that doesn’t make ‘em a little bleary eyed. I’m not the most creative – all good ideas welcome!
Thank you!
Jen/Amber,
Thank you SO much for taking a moment to write such thoughful responses to me. I really appreciate it! The ideas are fantastic and the moral support and encouragement was greatly needed as well. Today, is going great! He is in the tub right now, having the time of his life because he’s there to play for as long as he wants. I’m at the vanity on my laptop enjoying some time getting back to friends/fam on email. I’m looking forward to the rest of the day and finding time for him to be on his own a little more. I know this will be good for him. I was a kid who could always entertain herself and I still can as an adult. Last thing I want to do is raise a boy to become a man who has to be constantly entertained by someone else. I think there’s a lot to be said for being able to enjoy quiet time on your own. Again, my heartfelt thanks for your thoughtful answers. Have a wonderful day!

You are doing a GREAT job. You have one of the hardest jobs in the world, parenting a young child. It is mind numbing to do what you are doing. 5 minutes seems like an hour.
Here are some thoughts I had about what you wrote:
There is nothing wrong with having the TV on for awhile, especially only for an hour with educational programming. Rest time for Mommy and son is also ok- each in separate rooms so you get a break. Let him play in his room alone for an hour and learn to be by himself. That’s a part of maturing and becoming self-reliant.
You said that this is a day when you stayed home. Hopefully, most days you go out- grocery store, library, park, church, or a friend’s house.
I’m sure you go outside, but for today’s schedule you didn’t list any outdoor activity. Can you go for a walk? Teach your son to look at the neighborhood he lives in. Have him become familiar with his surroundings and learn to be observant. Ask questions like “What color is our house?” or ask him to find your house while you are walking down your block. Another thing to do outside is just to collect things- rocks while you are walking along, sticks, look for bugs, spiderwebs, leaves, etc. If you collect something as you go, then sort it when you come home. All the grey rocks together, all the white rocks together, etc. Or all big things, and all little things, etc. (sorting is a big math thing.)
Other ideas-
get a blank book (or just staple pages together) and you and your son glue photos of your family in the book. Look at the book often and talk about your family.
keep track of days on a calendar on the fridge. You can make a big calendar if you want to out of tagboard. Put stickers on days things happen- a school bus on Preschool days, a flower on Mother’s Day, a pumpkin on Halloween, etc. “X” off the day at the end of each day. This teaches a sense of time (what is a day?) and rhythm of the weekly schedule.
Look up the website “Preschool Express”. There is a monthly calendar with suggestions of things to do every day. It’s great for ideas and they are easy, everyday things that are educational.
Consider subscribing to “Ladybug” magazine or “Your Big Backyard” magazine or similar publication. They are a little expensive, but very educational. They come in the mail every month, so it’s something to look forward to, and they have activities in them to do. Your local library might have some copies on hand to look at.
Try and do a little something for yourself everyday. Wear your favorite jeans. Eat a piece of chocolate. Polish your toes. Call a friend. It will help you get through the day.
Good Luck. Keep in mind that you are doing a great job. Your son is learning the basics for life from you, and you won’t regret spending this time with him. Hang in there. This is the hardest part. It gets better when they go to school, because you get a little break. Keep up the good work.

Yes, I understand about getting out to a park, playdates, etc. I’m looking to hear about how and see a schedule of how a mom might manage her day when you do have to stay around the house all day. Thanks to all for your advice!

Well on a day where I don;’t have any plans to go out…I make some…I just cannot stay in the house all day…it’s awful and drives me mad…so I will sometimes go to the park with mine…or just walk to the shops nearby….but I ALWAYS go out once a day at least. Also I don’t play with mine all the time….they will ply alone quite a bit…I scedule in a couple of hours of crafting with them….and reading….then they will play in the sandpit or dig up the mud in the garden…or I fill up a big container of water and they play in that,…it was the same when I just had my daughter…my 2nd child was born when my first was almost 4 years old..so my eldest was like yours….on their own….you perhaps need to get out more?

if you have a computer there are some great learning websites or cds for the computer for toddler. They can learn how to interact, shapes, numbers, the alphabet. There are some great programs. Sometimes you need some alone time that would be a perfect time for your child to learn to be able to play on his own. So later on you dont feel the need to play with him every hour. This is a great way to have some mommy time and alone time.

It’s kind of driving me crazy! lol
I thought of it last night, I don’t know why but I remember this one part of the movie.
I think it’s set in New York. And there is a child (don’t know boy or girl) and the dad dies, somehow. Then they take his body away on this barge ship thing to some island with a lot of graves or something? And the kid stays with the dad’s “box” the whole time on the barge. And then they find this kid who’s been just sitting next to their dad’s coffin practically and I think it made the news or something?
agh.. I really want to know what this movie is! I think it was good

Don’t Say a Word (2001) starring Michael Douglas and Brittany Murphy. It was fictitious, by the way.
